FNB Edmonton was founded in 2018 by local activists from the Young Communist League and the Anarchist community. It has grown since then from 5 founding members to over 200. The first FNB meal was served at a rally held by Memoria Viva, a left-wing Chilean organisation in Edmonton.
We have served dozens of meals to both political activists and unhoused people. Some of our largest were the Climate Strike in 2019 where we served 300 people, the meal on Feb. 15th, 2020, where we served 50 people and had 11 volunteers helping between cooking and serving, and the Street Outreach YEG meal on July 17th, 2022, where we served 150 people and had 16 volunteers helping out.
In 2025, FNB YEG continues to serve meals once a month, usually to around 40 people. FNB YEG is a member of a global movement founded by Keith McHenry among others, in the 1980s. The global FNB movement has dozens of autonomous chapters across nearly every inhabited continent, all founded on the same core principles.
